World of Warcraft Trial of the Grand Crusader 10-man Strategy Guide: Lord Jaraxxus
Trial of the Grand Crusader is a heroic mode version of the Trial of the Crusader raid. The heroic version can often catch groups unprepared, but this strategy guide will help you complete the trials with ease. This portion of the guide focuses on a winning strategy for Lord Jaraxxus.
Preparation for Lord Jaraxxus
This guide assumes an understanding of the normal version of Lord Jaraxxus.
Lord Jaraxxus is the second boss encounter in Trial of the Grand Crusader. While much of the fight remains the same as in normal mode, some crucial changes in the fight make it essential for DPS to perform high and have good reflexes. Low DPS in a fight against Lord Jaraxxus can spell doom quickly for the entire raid group.
Deadly Boss Mods remains a recommended add-on for Lord Jaraxxus. Healers may also want to invest in an add-on for raid frames or debuffs that will display the Incinerate Flesh debuff clearly (such as PowerAuras or Vuhdo.)
Because only 10 people can be part of the raid group, selections for raid composition in terms of classes may be limited. Rather than focus on specific classes, make sure your raid has the following composition:
Tanks: Two tanks are needed for Lord Jaraxxus; one to tank Jaraxxus himself, and one to tank adds as they spawn. Between the tanks available, opt to put tanks with more interrupts available to them (warriors, death knights) against Jaraxxus, while tanks with less interrupts (paladins, druids) on adds.
Healers: Two healers are needed for Lord Jaraxxus. One healer should be preferably focused on single-target healing, and keeping an eye on the tanks and whoever becomes debuffed with Incinerate Flesh. The other healer should heal the raid and help the single-target healer on covering Incinerate Flesh and the main tank.
DPS: It is crucial that all DPS is able to perform high DPS numbers. The balance between ranged and melee during this fight is not crucial; however, two more things should be considered:
- Try to include one melee DPS that can help interrupt Jaraxxus' fireball casts.
Also try to ensure one mage or shaman in the group. The mage can spellsteal Jaraxxus' Nether Power buff, adding a huge boon to DPS; the shaman, on the other hand, can purge it. Priests are also capable of dispelling. Without a way to remove this buff, the raid may not be able to succeed.
Positioning for Lord Jaraxxus
The positioning for Lord Jaraxxus is very similar to the positioning of Gormok during the first phase of Northrend Beasts. The only difference is that the second tank will be standing by the portal and volcano spawn points, waiting to pick up adds.
The fight is more mobile as well, and all raid members including the off-tank must have an exit strategy planned so that when they receive Legion Flames, they can run to the wall and turn back again immediately, without running through other members of the raid or turning out of range of healers (toward the west side of the coliseum.) This is particularly crucial for melee, who should always run between ranged and from Jaraxxus' right shoulder, as portals spawn from the direction of his left shoulder.
The main tank must also be prepared to move Jaraxxus away from Legion Flames or Infernal AoE.
Fighting Lord Jaraxxus
As in the normal version of the Jaraxxus fight, the tank will fight Jaraxxus in the center of the room, and will focus on interrupting Fel Fireball (along with melee DPS.) Healers will continue to heal through Incinerate Flesh (which requires more healing done to remove the debuff), and players will run to the wall as previously discussed when they receive the Legion Flames debuff. A mage should spellsteal Jaraxxus' Nether Power buff; if none is available, it must be purged by a shaman or dispelled by a priest.
Unlike the normal version of the fight, however, when Jaraxxus summons Mistresses and Infernals, the portal/volcano will be targetable and must be killed as swiftly as possible by all raid DPS. The sooner the portal is taken out, the better.
It is essential that for the Nether Portals, a goal is set to only have a single Mistress spawn from the portal. Not only do these Mistresses' Pain Spikes hurt for a large amount of damage more, the Mistresses also gain an ability called Mistress's Kiss. This kiss will target random members in the raid, and will act as a school lockout on the next cast spell by those it lands on. This can be deadly against healers, and more than one Mistress can lock out the entire ranged DPS and healers in one swoop. If this kiss does land on a healer, they must attempt to use a non-instant spell from the opposite school of their healing (for instance, Lava Burst for shaman), or suffer the lockout time.
Infernal Volcanoes also act in this way, and the DPS's goal is to have no more than three infernals spawn from the volcano before it is killed. It is essential that all members of the raid, including melee DPS and tanks, move out of Fel Inferno while it is being channeled at all costs. The infernals will also charge to random raid members; when a raid member sees that an infernal has charged to them, they can move immediately to avoid the AoE afterward.
These phases will be repeated multiple times. It is essential that everyone stick to their role in the fight. Good situational awareness will win the day within about three cycles of adds. For Jaraxxus' Heroic 10 loot, take a look at WoWhead's list.
