Like most things in life, World of Warcraft is unfortunately not free. There is a one-off charge for the game itself and a recurring subscription fee. But what do you expect for such a fine game? If, however, one of the many celebrity-endorsed advertisements has gotten you interested (but not intrigued enough to buy the actual game) Blizzard does offer a 10-day free trial. They also allow for their original game and the two expansions to be downloaded online for an additional charge. Read below to find out how to download the game online and how to start your adventure today!

Blizzard maintains that both the downloading of the game and the creation of your account are free for 10 days. The downside? Trial accounts are said to have “limited functionality”, which roughly translates to restricted communication with other players and an imposed level cap. From personal experience, these limits do not impose on the gameplay enough to become noticeable or irritating. If you’re a returning player then both Burning Crusade and Wrath of the Lich King free trials are also available for online download. All Free Trials can be downloaded here.

After The 10 Days Are Over
Once your free trial is over, then its time to purchase the game. The original World of Warcraft game can be bought through the website. All you need is a credit card and the log-in details of your 10-day trial account so you can sign in. On your account maintenance page you will be prompted to buy the original game. The first 30 days of game play are free, but from there in after the following fees will apply:
- $14.99 per month for a month-to-month recurring subscription
- $13.99 per month for a 3-month recurring subscription
- $12.99 per month for a 6-month recurring subscription

Blizzard has released two additional expansions for World of Warcraft, both of which can be downloaded online. In the same way as the original game, Burning Crusade and Wrath of the Lich King can be bought through the account management section of the website. Just simply log on and follow the instructions on how to buy the expansions. You will need to purchase these to gain access to content and levels past 60.

Why Download Online?
Why do we buy anything online? Simply put, it (tends to) save us time and money. If you were to purchase the game online then have it delivered to your door, the delivery charges would add up. Perhaps the best way to conquer this would be going to the store and picking yourself up a copy. But if we are being honest, we gamers don’t exactly enjoy the hassle of shopping malls and waiting in queues. We enjoy simplicity and efficiency, and that’s what Blizzard is aiming to achieve by offering their games in downloadable versions.

Blizzard has made it easier on its customers by offering downloads for the original game and both expansions. Their website if full of links offering downloads which are easily accessible (even if the download times are a little on the lengthy side). But hey, it’s World of Warcraft, so it’s worth the wait!
