Getting Into Shattered Halls
The entrance to the Shattered Halls does not require a flying mount, and while characters lower than level 70 may enter, it is not recommened. To get to the entrance, go to the summoning stone near Hellfire Ramparts, but instead of going left to the Ramparts, go right up the ramp. There will be a couple NPCs blocking the way, but they are non-elite.
Unlike most instances that you simply walk into, Shattered Halls has a gate in front of it. There are a couple of ways to get in, even if you do not have the key. A Rogue with his lockpicking skill at 350 or higher can pick the lock and let the group in. Alternatively, your group can wait outside and follow other groups in, or, have a friend with a key come by and unlock the gate.
If you want to get the key, the quest line isn't too terribly difficult, but it will take 4-5 high-level players to finish the last step. The quest begins by killing Smith Gorlunk on the Ata'mal Terrace of the Black Temple. He drops an item that begins a quest and sends your character to Honor Hold / Thrallmar.

The next step requires you to find a few items and deliver them to your respective faction's NPC. The items are:
- Fel Iron Bar x4
- Arcane Dust x2
- Mote of Fire x4
Most of these items are relatively inexpensive on the Auction House, and the gold rewards for completing this chain should more than cover the cost.
The final step requires your group to kill a Fel Reaver in Hellfire Peninsula. It usually takes a group of 5 players at level 70 to kill the Fel Reaver, but it can be done with less if they are geared enough. You can only complete this quest in a group (not a raid), but other people not grouped with you can still help. After you turn in the final quest in the chain you will be rewarded with the key to the Shattered Halls. Just beware, you may be inundated with requests to open the gate if you make your prized key known.
