A little background information...
When it comes to World of Warcraft, most of us that play the game on a regular (or even addictive) basis, cannot wait for the Wrath of the Lich King expansion to come out. We keep up with the latest information, we either play the beta or have friends that do, and we are just chomping at the bit to get in and play the new Death Knight Hero Class that will be hitting the game when the expansion does.
But, for those that do not follow the news of the expansion as closely as others, you may be wondering just what is the deal with this new class and why should you care about what it is? Well, here is a preview of the Death Knight Hero Class from the Wrath of the Lich King expansion from Blizzard to help you understand just what it is and what you can look forward to.
First, let's go through the Hero class itself a bit. This new class will be derived from the base classes in the game but will be more specialized into the game's lore. The class itself is actually being taken from earlier Blizzard titles, such as Warcraft. Supposedly, the Death Knight Hero Class will be the first of the Hero classes to come out with expansion packs, and Blizzard has rumored that they will be releasing a new Hero class with each new expansion - which is probably a great way to keep us buying those expensive expansion packs! The Death Knight class was actually first introduced by Blizzard in Warcraft II, and has appeared in Warcraft III and in Warcraft RPG. This will be the first of the hero classes in World of Warcraft and will set the stage on how the next hero classes are released with other expansions.
Now, since there is not a lot of information available on the Hero class itself right now, let's move on to the Death Knight and get the basics of it down so you will see what the new and interesting things are that will go along with this expansion. The Death Knight class will have two specific roles which will be mostly what you would expect from a knight or hero - damage and tanking. Since they won't use shields, they will use two-handed weapons, which will probably mean new and more awesome damage dealing two-handed weps when the expansion hits as well. This class will also mix their melee abilities with necromancer-type skills. The players that may be familiar with the class from other Blizzard titles will see some of the similarities, and note the differences as well. But, they are not the same orcish types that were seen in those titles.
The main base behind the lore of the Death Knight is that when Orgrim Doomhammer first took over as warchief of the Horde, he wanted to crush the orc warlocks of the Shadow Council. But, he spared the council's master, Gul'dan, when the former leader promised his service to Doomhammer. Gul'dan then created a new warrior race to serve the Horde, and experimented with the souls of slain council members. He was finally able to instill the spirit of Teron Gorefiend into a corpse of a knight of Stormwind, giving birth to the very first Death Knight.
Then, Gul'dan began to transform other council members creating this new class that would spread fear in Azeroth. After the Second War, when Gul'dan was dead, most of the Horde (along with the Death Knights) headed back through the Dark Portal to Draenor. The Death Knights who survived disappeared when Draenor was destroyed, except for Teron Gorefiend, who still enhabits the Black Temple. Now, the Lich King has created a whole new Death Knight breed that use runes to deal their destruction on the land. These new Death Knights are not like their predecessors, and they pledged their souls to the Lich King for immortality. Those who do fall in battle are raised soon after to continue to fight for the Lich King. They now only wait for Prince Arthas and the Lich King to unleash their fury upon Azeroth.
The next part of my Death Knight preview will give you a more in-depth look at the character play itself so that you will know what you need to do and what you will need to study on before you spec your knight in one of the three talent trees.
